Position Overview The Relay Technician position lies within the Balance of Plant Protection and Control Engineering team in Operations of Avangrid Renewables.
Balance of Plants Protection and Control Engineering team is responsible for engineering design, commissioning, troubleshooting, and maintenance functions for approximately 70 high-voltage substations and associated overhead/underground facilities.
This includes hardware, software, communication systems, and data concentration for protection and controls, RTUs, and integration systems.
Primary work location will be a home office when not traveling for job duties.
Responsibilities The main responsibilities of the Relay Technician position are related to Protection, Controls, Automation, and other BOP support.
Part of the responsibilities is to travel and support on-site execution of projects (approximately 35% of the time).
Install, maintain, adjust, test and repair all substation meters, relay and control equipment.
Oversee, assist and validate meter/relay testing when performed by contractors.
Perform signal testing on low-voltage electrical circuits (e.
g.
, relay I/O, secondary instrument transformer signals, etc.
).
Able to understand and diagnose problems related to substation relay systems and related systems, and perform the work to correct these problems.
Oversee quality and accuracy of numerous electrical contractors associated with new project development and operational substations.
Operate various types of electrical test equipment including but not limited to Doble and Manta.
Interface with software such as Protection Suite and AcSELerator.
Assist in the review of schematics and one- and three-line diagrams to verify relay functionality and integration with other protection and control components such as RTUs, test devices, and other utility companies’ relays.
Aid in development of written standards for commissioning, acceptance testing and maintenance procedures for protective relaying using manufacturer’s technical manuals and NERC requirements.
Perform federally mandated (NERC) testing on protection systems according to NERC PRC-005 standards and document results.
Verify protection, control and automation logic through function testing of the associated systems.
Provide technical assistance to internal and external stakeholders for a wide variety of projects involving BOP facilities.
In the event of critical failures, provide support to site personnel with analyzing failures and support switching procedures outside of working hours (on an on-call basis).
Develop and evaluate test reports.
Troubleshoot and repair complex electrical circuits.
Must be willing to work in high and medium voltage substation and collector system facilities.
On-site work may involve inclement weather, electrical hazards, climbing turbines and ladders, and occasionally lifting up to 50 pounds.
Qualifications: Must have had at least five years of experience in substation protection relay system setting, commissioning, testing and troubleshooting.
Working knowledge of industry and regulatory standards (e.
g.
, IEEE, NEC, NESC, NETA, OSHA, etc.
).
Working knowledge of NERC PRC standards.
Working knowledge and understanding of one- and three-line diagrams, elementary diagrams, as well as SEL and GE relay settings.
A current driver’s license is required.
Working knowledge of industrial communication protocols (ethernet, Mirrored Bits, serial, etc.
).
